Description

Soft and chewy cake-mix bars filled with Halloween Oreos and colorful seasonal sprinkles. These easy Halloween dessert bars have crisp cookie pieces, a tender vanilla center, and a festive orange-and-black appearance.

Ingredients

Scale

1 standard box French vanilla or yellow cake mix

1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled

2 large eggs

2 tablespoons milk

18 Halloween Oreos, divided

1/3 cup Halloween jimmies or sprinkles, divided

Nonstick cooking spray, as needed

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.

2. Line a 9×13-inch metal baking pan with parchment paper, leaving overhang on two sides, and lightly grease the exposed areas.

3. Roughly chop 14 Halloween Oreos into bite-size pieces and quarter the remaining 4 cookies for the topping.

4. Stir the cake mix, melted butter, eggs, and milk together in a large bowl until no dry pockets remain. The mixture should resemble thick cookie dough rather than pourable cake batter.

5. Gently fold in the 14 chopped Oreos and half of the Halloween sprinkles.

6. Transfer the dough to the prepared pan and press it into an even layer with a lightly greased spatula or clean damp fingertips.

7. Press the quartered Oreos lightly into the surface and scatter the remaining sprinkles over the top.

8. Bake for 18 to 23 minutes, until the edges are set, the center is puffed and no longer glossy, and a toothpick shows moist crumbs without wet batter.

9. Cool the bars in the pan for at least 30 minutes. Lift them out using the parchment overhang and cut into 16 bars with a sharp knife.

Notes

The batter should be very thick and must be pressed into the pan rather than poured.

Do not overbake. The bars continue to firm as they cool.

Regular Oreos can replace Halloween Oreos when the seasonal variety is unavailable.

Use jimmies rather than tiny nonpareils to reduce color bleeding.

Do not taste the raw dough because it contains raw flour and eggs.

For clean slices, cool completely and wipe the knife between cuts.

Store cooled bars in an airtight container at room temperature for 2 to 3 days or refrigerate for up to 5 days.

Wrap individual bars and freeze for up to 2 months. Thaw at room temperature.

For a softer center, microwave one bar for 8 to 10 seconds.
